What is Freibergs Disease? This is a term given to a very specific condition most often affecting the end of the 2 nd metatarsal bone in the foot. It is not a severe widespread disease, but a condition whereby the head of the metatarsal becomes misshapen and loses its nice round smooth contour. Freiberg disease is a foot condition caused by physical stress on the metatarsal bones. The stress creates fractures on the bone which can interrupt the blood supply to the area. This causes avascular necrosis, death of the bone cells.
Also altered movement around the forefoot can lead to abnormal loading on the second metatarsal and make some children more susceptible to Freiberg’s disease.
